The Saint-Patern district: the heart of Vannes

There are a multitude of things to discover VannesHowever, the Saint-Patern remains a must-see in the medieval city.

Immerse yourself in the medieval world of Saint-Patern

The Saint-Patern district is the oldest in the town of Vannes. Saint-Partern is located on the site of the town founded many years ago by the Romans in the 1st century AD.er century BC.

Today, it's one of the most picturesque districts in Vannes, with streets whose names are each more evocative than the last: Rue du Four, Rue de la Tannerie... Names that still remind us of the diversity of traders present in this district in the Middle Ages.

Many timber-framed houses always bear witness to this medieval past. These period houses are just as pretty as each other and have always given colour to the town of Vannes. You may already have noticed that most half-timbered houses have a first floor higher than the ground floor. In the Middle Ages, this was a common architectural feature, as it left a sufficiently wide passageway for the public thoroughfare and gave the upper floors more floor space. What's more, in the past, residents only paid taxes based on their floor area.

As a little anecdote, most of the houses have different coloured facades, because at the time, few residents knew how to read. Like the signs, the colours helped them to find their way around the neighbourhood.

A lively and colourful neighbourhood

The Saint-Patern district is a lively place day and night. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, as well as a number of well-known boutiques!

Since 2018, street art has also been taking up residence in Vannes. At 14 rue du maréchal Leclerc, the world-renowned Franco-Spanish duo Dourone have created a 150m2 of graffiti on the facade of a building depicting a Chouan, the Duchess Anne de Bretagne and a fisherman. A beautiful tribute to Brittany. If you're passing through the Saint-Patern you won't want to miss it!
